Bali Buddha began in order to support a healthy lifestyle for our own families. In 2000, we couldn't find a steady supply of organic food or healthy products in Ubud. So we set out to create a market for organic farmers by starting a restaurant and natural foods store and concentrating our efforts on raising awareness of health food issues, organic farming and recycling. There are now two weekly organic markets in Ubud and we're excited to see our commitment to suppliers pay off by allowing them to make a living entirely from organic food. Bali Buddha was also the first to support the wide-scale production of brown rice on the island.
But organic foods are just part of our commitment to a healthy lifestyle; we also wanted Bali Buddha to showcase our belief that all lifestyle can be supported in a healthy, healing, relaxing environment.
At Bali Buddha you can bask under Sacred Geometry that we try to incorporate into the environment as it is our belief that a principle of interconnectedness permeates everything we do in life, from the buildings we live in, to the food we eat, and that the way we live our lives is a blueprint for our mind to connect to the divine. We also offer free use of the Family Systems Research Group healing cards.
We want to be able to feed our own families healthy, organic, MSG-free food, and we developed the Bali Buddha menu to treat our customers the same way. Free of Wi-fi, Bali Buddha is an inspirational, alternative restaurant where kids are welcome and the focus is on sharing conversation or simply enjoying your meal. We are located on one of Ubud's quiet side-streets, where kids and dogs play in the road, and you can watch traditional Balinese life unfold around you. Linger on our comfortable lounges over delicious, healthy meals, and enjoy the music. The menu at Bali Buddha caters to everyone: salads, soups, pasta, burgers, Indonesian dishes, sandwiches and desserts, all made using organic produce, meats and freshly-baked goods whenever possible. We have a variety of vegan, raw food and vegetarian dishes as well.
You can also treat yourself to one of our freshly-made juices, smoothies or super health drinks. Have an Indian chai tea, caffeine-free maca java energizer or cappuccino, made with freshly-ground, organic coffee, and read the Herald Tribune and the Jakarta Post, delivered daily.
We sell a wide range of alternative breads in our shop, as well as locally-sourced jamus (health tonics), soy, rice and nut milks, an extensive range of vitamins and supplements, as well as many other local and imported foods. When we started our food store, we wanted to help local cottage industries by selling herbal preparations, jamus and many other products. Today, many of these product lines are found in shops all over Bali.
If you're looking for natural household and skincare products, we carry them as well. We have always felt it important to support local, home-cottage industries. As our families grew, we needed reliable sources of such household items as re-usable diapers or goddess pads and natural insect repellent. So we sourced our non-food items from small suppliers, allowing many local, family businesses to flourish. We are always looking for ways to develop new product lines for our store and support new suppliers. You can enjoy any of Bali Buddha's products, meals or groceries via our efficient home delivery service.
From the beginning, Bali Buddha has been an active member of the greater Bali community, supporting and promoting social and environmental programs. We support the SOS Orangutan Foundation, the Say No To Plastic initiative that encourages using cloth shopping bags, and Yayasan Bumi Sehat, a natural birthing centre for poor families. Bali Buddha was the first store in Bali to offer shopping bags made from recycled newspapers and sell reusable cloth shopping bags. In 2000, there were no official recycling programs in Bali so we established two successful recycling programs in Ubud, funded by micro-credit loans, that today employ local people and are building sustainable local solutions for waste management. These support the already existing recycling infrastructure as much as possible. At the same time we are trying to raise awareness about this system and to gain local support in appreciating its benefit to their own community.
As our children grew older, and started attending school, we wanted to ensure that a healthy chain of eating and living was not broken, so we started to offer healthy lunch programs by opening Bali Buddha outlets or catering in schools Bali. We now cater to 5 different schools.
